Founded in 1947, The Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR) is the longest running engineering competition in Canada. Students design, build, and race toboggans with running surfaces made entirely of concrete. The toboggans are required to be under 159 kg, be designed to withstand an impact at 80 km/h impact, and house braking and steering systems. It is an opportunity for students to display their engineering ingenuity, creativity, and innovation. During the competition the toboggan is evaluated on the concrete mix design, metal superstructure, braking and steering systems, and environmental impact and sustainability. Both the design and performance of the sled are scored. In addition, the team members are judged on their technical report and presentation, and sportsmanship.
